These 5 safety equipment questions are drawn from the Ontario Hunter Education Practice Exam. They are original practice items written from published Ontario Hunter Education Program curriculum topics, with an explanation on every answer.
Safety equipment questions
1Two hunters walking a field swing on the same flushing bird. What is the term for the area each must confine their shots to?
Show the answer
Zone of fire
Each hunter in a group is assigned a zone of fire and does not shoot outside it, no matter where the bird goes. Agreeing on zones before the walk starts is what keeps a swinging shotgun off the person beside you.
2How should a firearm be stored at home when not in use?
Show the answer
Unloaded, with ammunition stored separately, and rendered inoperable or locked in a secure container
Safe storage separates three things: the firearm, its ammunition, and the ability to operate it. Meeting only one of those is not safe storage.
3Why must you match ammunition exactly to the firearm's stamped markings?
Show the answer
Because a cartridge that chambers is not necessarily a cartridge that is safe to fire
Several cartridges will physically chamber in the wrong firearm while generating pressures the action was never built for. The stamped designation on the barrel is the only authority.
4What does a lifeline running from the ground to the stand give you that a harness alone does not?
Show the answer
Continuous attachment during the climb, which is when most falls happen
A harness only protects you once it is clipped to something. The lifeline is what keeps you attached from the first step off the ground, closing the exact gap where most falls occur.
5How often should the straps and cables on a fixed tree stand be inspected?
Show the answer
Before every use, with replacement on the manufacturer's schedule
Webbing and cable degrade from sun, moisture, and freeze cycles while the stand sits in the woods between hunts. A strap that held last November is not evidence it will hold today.
