Hunting Gear and Range Day Checklists

These are tick-box packing lists for a day hunt, a night out, the range, field care and the truck. Tick items as you pack, and print the lists to take with you.

Your ticks are saved in this browser, so you can pack over a few evenings and pick up where you left off. Nothing is sent to us. Skip anything that doesn't fit your hunt, and add your own items in pen once it's printed.

Rules for licences, tags, hunter orange and carrying firearms differ by province and change between seasons, so check items like these against your own provincial or territorial regulations and the RCMP's page on storing and transporting firearms.

Day hunt pack checklist

What goes with you every time you leave the truck. Any day hunt can turn into a night out.

Overnight and backcountry additions

Add these to the day pack when you plan to sleep out or go far from the road.

More on this: wilderness survival, bear safety and bear spray.

Range day checklist

For sighting in, practice and checking zero before the season.

Field care kit for after the shot

Recovering, dressing and cooling an animal goes better when this is already packed.

Vehicle kit for hunting trips

Back roads are a long way from a tow truck. This stays in the vehicle all season.

Using and printing these gear lists

Each list stands on its own. A day hunt needs the first list. A trip with a night in the bush adds the second, and the field care kit rides along on any hunt where you hope to fill a tag. The range list is for sighting in before the season, and the vehicle list stays in the truck all fall.

Pack from the list, not from memory. The items people forget are rarely the big ones. It's the headlamp batteries, the dry socks and the knife sharpener. Tick each item as it goes in the pack, not as you think of it. When you get home, restock what you used before you untick anything.

To print, use the button above the lists. The printed page keeps the 80 items and your ticks, and leaves out the menu, the notes and the links. On a phone, the print button opens the share or save options, where you can save it as a PDF.

Questions about the hunting gear checklists

Will my ticks still be there if I close the page?

Yes, on the same browser and device. Your ticks are saved in your browser's own storage, not on our servers. A private window, a different device or clearing your site data starts you over with a blank list.

How do I print only the lists?

Use the print button above the lists, or your browser's own print command. The print layout drops the menu, the footer and the notes, and sets the lists in two columns where they fit. Ticks you have made print as ticked boxes.

Why does the list say nothing about quantities or legal colours?

Because those rules are set by each province and territory and change between seasons. A list that names them would be wrong somewhere. Items with legal weight are listed in general terms, and the details belong in your own regulations.

Do I need the overnight items on a day hunt?

Not all of them. But a day hunt that runs late, or a wrong turn at dusk, can turn into a night out. The day pack list keeps a small version of the essentials, like an emergency shelter and a fire kit, for exactly that.

For what to wear and how to layer it, see hunting clothing and equipment. To price the ammunition on your range list, the ammo price table compares stores by cost per round.
