PEI Hunting Regulations and Species Quiz: all 60 questions

  1. 1. Your cousin moves to Summerside and asks which schedule holds the deer season. What do the Hunting and Trapping Seasons Regulations actually set out?

    1. Schedule I holds the specified game animals, and its eight entries are birds, hare, furbearers and squirrel
    2. Schedule I holds small game and Schedule V holds big game
    3. Deer sit in Schedule III alongside the trapping seasons
    4. Big game seasons are published in the Fur Harvesting Regulations instead

    Show the answer

Schedule I holds the specified game animals, and its eight entries are birds, hare, furbearers and squirrel

Trick question. There's no deer season to find. Schedule I is the list of specified game animals in Prince Edward Island, and it runs pheasant, ruffed grouse, Hungarian (grey) partridge, snowshoe hare, fox, raccoon, coyote and red squirrel. Schedule II adds a single further line. Schedule III carries the trapping seasons, and Schedule IV describes a beaver zone on the north shore. Deer, moose, bear and caribou aren't in any of them, and that gap is the one fact that sets an Island hunting page apart from every other page in the country.

Source: Wildlife Conservation Act, Hunting and Trapping Seasons Regulations (Legislative Counsel Office consolidation, current to September 3, 2022): Subject to subsection (2), the open seasons, daily limits and possession limits in respect of hunting specified game animals are set out in Schedule I. Checked 2026-09-22.

  2. 2. Schedule II covers harvestable wildlife rather than specified game animals. How long is it?

    1. Three entries: crow, starling and rock pigeon
    2. One entry, American crow, with no closed season
    3. It was revoked in 2019 and folded into Schedule I
    4. Eight entries, the same list as Schedule I

    Show the answer

One entry, American crow, with no closed season

Just one row: American crow. The heading matches Schedule I's, with columns for open season, daily limit and possession limit, and the crow line reads no closed season, no limits either side. That one line isn't the whole of what's published about crows, mind you. Elsewhere in the Hunting Summary, crow picks up a shot rule, so a one-line schedule only tells part of the story.

Source: Wildlife Conservation Act, Hunting and Trapping Seasons Regulations (Legislative Counsel Office consolidation, current to September 3, 2022): The open seasons, daily limits and possession limits in respect of hunting harvestable wildlife are set out in Schedule II. Checked 2026-09-22.

  3. 3. Pheasant live on the Island and pheasant is named in Schedule I. What sits in the open season column beside it?

    1. September 26 to December 31, the same dates as ruffed grouse
    2. October 15 to November 15, outside the excluded Lots
    3. No open season
    4. No closed season

    Show the answer

    No open season

No open season. Being on the list and having a season aren't the same thing, and pheasant is where the gap shows: the bird is right there in Schedule I with dashes in both limit columns and no open season against its name. The 2026 Hunting Summary's own seasons table reads the same way. Call the Island pheasant country if you like. You're describing the birds, not the schedule.

Source: Wildlife Conservation Act, Hunting and Trapping Seasons Regulations (Legislative Counsel Office consolidation, current to September 3, 2022): Pheasant No open season Checked 2026-09-22.

  4. 4. Two entries across the PEI hunting schedules carry no closed season at all. Which pair?

    1. Snowshoe hare and raccoon
    2. Coyote and red fox
    3. Ruffed grouse and Hungarian partridge
    4. Red squirrel and American crow

    Show the answer

    Red squirrel and American crow

Red squirrel and American crow. Squirrel closes out Schedule I with no closed season against it, and crow, the only line in Schedule II, carries the same entry. Everything else in the hunting schedules is bounded by dates. Red squirrel even turns up a third time, in Schedule III's trapping list, where it reads the same way again.

Source: Wildlife Conservation Act, Hunting and Trapping Seasons Regulations (Legislative Counsel Office consolidation, current to September 3, 2022): Red Squirrel No closed season Checked 2026-09-22.

  5. 5. Ducks, geese, woodcock and snipe never appear in Schedule I. What does the 2026 Hunting Summary say those birds need?

    1. A valid federal Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit carrying the Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation stamp
    2. A provincial waterfowl endorsement added to the hunting licence
    3. Nothing past the provincial licence and the conservation fee
    4. A Snowshoe Hare Snaring Licence, which covers waterfowl as well

    Show the answer

A valid federal Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit carrying the Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation stamp

Migratory birds are Ottawa's file, not Charlottetown's. That's why they're missing from the provincial schedules and get a section of their own, with their own season table. The Summary points hunters to the federal permit and its stamp, and notes that an e-Permit works without the physical stamp attached. Two pieces of paper from two governments. The provincial one doesn't stand in for the federal one.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: To hunt migratory game birds (e.g., ducks, geese, woodcock, and snipe) in Canada, you are required to possess a valid federal Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit (or e-Permit) with an affixed (or printed image of) Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation stamp Checked 2026-09-30.

  6. 6. A new hunter asks about the cormorants and hawks working the shore. What does the Summary's non-game birds section report?

    1. Cormorants sit in Schedule II alongside crow
    2. Most birds are protected all year, eagles, hawks, owls, seagulls and cormorants among them
    3. Non-game birds open up once a hunter holds a furbearer licence
    4. Only songbirds are protected, and the larger species are not

    Show the answer

Most birds are protected all year, eagles, hawks, owls, seagulls and cormorants among them

Here the Summary flips the schedules round and names what's protected instead of what's open. Eagles, hawks, owls, seagulls, cormorants and non-game migratory birds all sit in one sentence. The section then goes on to name shorebirds, herons, grebes, songbirds and woodpeckers under the federal Migratory Birds Convention Act. On an island where crow is the whole of Schedule II? That paragraph is worth reading twice.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: Most birds are protected throughout the year, including eagles, hawks, owls, seagulls, cormorants and non-game migratory birds. Checked 2026-09-30.

  7. 7. Snowshoe hare appears twice in the Summary's seasons table, once for hunting and once for snaring. What does the Summary attach to the snaring line?

    1. The same dates as hare hunting, October 1 to March 31
    2. Nothing extra, since the general hunting licence covers snaring
    3. A separate Snowshoe Hare Snaring Licence, with the season running November 1 to February 28
    4. A restriction to Lots 43 to 47

    Show the answer

A separate Snowshoe Hare Snaring Licence, with the season running November 1 to February 28

Its own licence. Snaring gets a separate row, a shorter window and its own line at the vendor's counter, and the fee schedule prices that licence at five dollars before HST, with a footnote under the seasons table as well. Then the General Hunting Regulations specify what a hare snare has to be made from. So the licence is only half of what there is to read.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: A Snowshoe Hare Snaring Licence is required Checked 2026-09-30.

  8. 8. The Hungarian (grey) partridge season carries a carve-out no other PEI season has. Where does subsection 1(2) say the Schedule I season does not apply?

    1. Within 200 metres of any occupied dwelling
    2. On the Island's roughly 45,000 hectares of public land
    3. Anywhere in Kings County
    4. In Lots 1 to 10 and Lots 43 to 47

    Show the answer

In Lots 1 to 10 and Lots 43 to 47

Lots 1 to 10 and 43 to 47. Not counties, and not management zones. Prince Edward Island still describes itself through the townships of the 1767 survey, and the partridge exclusion is drawn on that old grid, with Lots 1 to 10 at the western end and 43 to 47 at the eastern. The season covers the middle and stops short at both tips. A footnote in the Summary's seasons table repeats the exclusion.

Source: Wildlife Conservation Act, Hunting and Trapping Seasons Regulations (Legislative Counsel Office consolidation, current to September 3, 2022): The open season set out in Schedule I for hunting Hungarian (grey) partridge does not apply in Lots 1 to 10 and Lots 43 to 47 of Prince Edward Island. Checked 2026-09-22.

  9. 9. Ruffed grouse gets the longest upland season in Schedule I. What dates does the schedule give it?

    1. September 26 to December 31
    2. October 15 to November 15
    3. October 1 to March 31
    4. September 1 to September 15

    Show the answer

    September 26 to December 31

Late September through the end of the year, so a shade over three months. The same row sets a daily limit of 3 and a possession limit of 6. Compare Hungarian partridge, the other upland bird with a season attached. It gets a single month, October 15 to November 15, with those same two numbers beside it.

Source: Wildlife Conservation Act, Hunting and Trapping Seasons Regulations (Legislative Counsel Office consolidation, current to September 3, 2022): Ruffed Grouse September 26 - December 31 Checked 2026-09-22.

  10. 10. Snowshoe hare hunting shows a daily limit of 5 and a dash in the possession column. What does the Summary say a dash means in that table?

    1. The possession limit matches the daily limit
    2. No limit
    3. The species is closed for the season
    4. A permit sets the number case by case

    Show the answer

    No limit

No limit. The Summary footnotes its own table so the dashes aren't left to guesswork, which is why fox, raccoon, coyote and red squirrel show dashes in both columns while grouse and partridge show numbers. Hare is the odd one out. A daily figure, and a dash sitting right beside it.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: "-" = no limit Checked 2026-09-30.

  11. 11. Raccoon and coyote share an open season in Schedule I. Which dates?

    1. November 1 to January 31
    2. October 15 to February 28
    3. October 1 to March 31
    4. November 15 to January 31

    Show the answer

    October 1 to March 31

Both run October 1 to March 31 for hunting, the same six months snowshoe hare gets. Watch which schedule you've got open, though. Schedule III is the trapping list, and it sets different dates for those same two animals: raccoon from October 15, coyote from October 15 to February 28. One regulation, one species, and two sets of dates depending on the method.

Source: Wildlife Conservation Act, Hunting and Trapping Seasons Regulations (Legislative Counsel Office consolidation, current to September 3, 2022): Raccoon October 1 - March 31 Checked 2026-09-22.

  12. 12. Of the furbearers listed for hunting in Schedule I, which gets the shortest open season?

    1. Raccoon
    2. Coyote
    3. Red squirrel
    4. Fox, at November 1 to January 31

    Show the answer

Fox, at November 1 to January 31

Fox, with three months. Raccoon and coyote get six, and red squirrel gets no closed season at all. For trapping, Schedule III hands fox the same November 1 to January 31 window. Section 2(3) then splits it by device: modified foot-hold traps to November 14, and snares as well from November 15.

Source: Wildlife Conservation Act, Hunting and Trapping Seasons Regulations (Legislative Counsel Office consolidation, current to September 3, 2022): Fox November 1 - January 31 Checked 2026-09-22.

  13. 13. A duck hunter is heading out in a boat with a motor. What does the 2026 Hunting Summary remind them to carry?

    1. Proof of competence, such as a Pleasure Craft Operator Card, and photo ID
    2. Only their PEI hunting licence
    3. A printed copy of the boat's registration and nothing else
    4. A Wildlife Conservation Fund receipt taped inside the hull

    Show the answer

Proof of competence, such as a Pleasure Craft Operator Card, and photo ID

Proof of competence, like a Pleasure Craft Operator Card, and photo ID. That's the reminder on the Summary's boat safety page for anyone running a boat with a motor. The boat is a responsibility of its own, apart from the hunt, and a hunting licence doesn't cover it.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary (Boat Safety): Hunters are reminded that they must carry proof of competence such as a Pleasure Craft Operator Card, and photo ID if they are operating a boat fitted with a motor. Checked 2026-09-30.

  14. 14. The first item in the Summary's General Hunting Regulations concerns the Hunter Safety Certificate. What conduct does it attach to?

    1. Hunting big game only
    2. Carrying a firearm in game habitat, as well as hunting any game
    3. Buying ammunition from a vendor
    4. Guiding a non-resident hunter

    Show the answer

Carrying a firearm in game habitat, as well as hunting any game

It reaches further than most provinces write it. Carrying a firearm in game habitat without the certificate is listed right alongside hunting without it, one entry with two limbs, so hunting isn't the trigger on its own. It's also item one of twenty-six. That list runs from shot size to shipping coupons, and the page rewards a slow read.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: carry a firearm in game habitat or hunt any game unless you are in possession of a Hunter Safety Certificate. Checked 2026-09-30.

  15. 15. Prince Edward Island puts the certificate check at the sales counter, not only in the field. What does the Summary's Hunter Safety Certificate page state about vendors?

    1. Vendors record the certificate number and forward it to the Division later
    2. Vendors check certificates for non-residents only
    3. Vendors are prohibited from issuing a licence to any person who does not possess a certificate
    4. Vendors issue the certificate itself at the time of sale

    Show the answer

Vendors are prohibited from issuing a licence to any person who does not possess a certificate

The vendor is the gate. Buying a PEI hunting licence means showing a PEI Wildlife Card, which the 2026 Summary says was formerly known as the Hunter Safety Certificate. For the vendor, it's a flat prohibition on selling to anyone without one.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: Vendors are prohibited from issuing a licence to any person who does not possess a Hunter Safety Certificate. Checked 2026-09-30.

  16. 16. A hunter over from Maine asks whether his home certificate counts on the Island. What does the Summary publish about non-residents?

    1. Only certificates from the four Atlantic provinces are accepted
    2. Only Canadian certificates are accepted
    3. Non-residents take the PEI course regardless
    4. Certificates issued by the province, state, or country where they live are accepted in PEI

    Show the answer

Certificates issued by the province, state, or country where they live are accepted in PEI

Province, state or country. All three are named, which is wider than most Canadian jurisdictions put in writing. The same page sends lost or stolen cards to the Fish and Wildlife Section. Keep in mind that the sentence covers the certificate, not the licence; the Summary handles non-resident licensing separately, a few pages earlier.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: Non-residents are advised that Hunter Safety Certificates issued by the province, state, or country where they live are accepted in PEI. Checked 2026-09-30.

  17. 17. The province lists a Bow Hunting Safety Course beside the Hunter Safety Course. What does its course page say the bow course also includes?

    1. The Hunter Safety Course, a Tree Stand Safety Course and a practical bow shooting test
    2. A crossbow proficiency test and a first aid certificate
    3. Nothing further, since it replaces the Hunter Safety Course
    4. The Canadian Firearms Safety Course and a second field day

    Show the answer

The Hunter Safety Course, a Tree Stand Safety Course and a practical bow shooting test

It wraps the hunter safety content and stacks two more things on top, one of them hands-on. Give the tree stand course a second look. A province with nothing larger than a coyote on its schedules still runs one inside its bow stream. Registration for the bow course is by phone, on 902-368-4683 or 1-800-368-4683.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, Hunting, Firearms, and Bow Hunting Safety Courses: The Bow Hunting Safety Course also includes: The Hunter Safety Course, Tree Stand Safety Course, and A practical bow shooting test. Checked 2026-09-22.

  18. 18. PEI publishes its Hunter Safety education program as two components. What does the course page say has to happen before you register on the online site?

    1. Pay the $60 fee at an Access PEI office
    2. Call 902-368-4683 for an access code for the on-line component
    3. Attend the field day first
    4. Buy a hunting licence from an authorized vendor

    Show the answer

Call 902-368-4683 for an access code for the on-line component

Phone first, register second. The order matters because the province states that the online half is being offered free of charge to first time hunters who are residents of PEI. Finishing it produces a Field Day Voucher, and the same number books the field day, where the page says an instructor will confirm your knowledge and understanding of the on-line course materials. As for the $60 in the wrong answer, that's the federal firearms course, paid at Access PEI. A separate thing entirely.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, Hunting, Firearms, and Bow Hunting Safety Courses: However, before you register on the site you must call 902-368-4683 to get an access code for the on-line component. Checked 2026-09-22.

  19. 19. The Summary spells out what counts as a resident for licensing. What is the first test it gives?

    1. Ownership of real property anywhere in the province
    2. Two weeks of residence, with no further condition attached
    3. Six months of residence immediately before applying for a licence
    4. A PEI driver's licence and a health card

    Show the answer

Six months of residence immediately before applying for a licence

Six months right before applying is the baseline. Beneath it the Summary lists five alternatives. There's a two-week route for someone transferred here by an employer, two routes tied to educational training, an employment route counting six months out of the previous twelve, and one for a person born in the province who owns real property in it. Everyone outside those six descriptions, the Summary records, is not considered a resident.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: has resided in the province for a period of six months immediately prior to making an application for a licence. Checked 2026-09-30.

  20. 20. The Summary's residency page adds one condition specific to non-resident hunters. What is it?

    1. They hunt only on public land
    2. They hold a federal permit for every species
    3. They register with a Conservation Officer on arrival
    4. They must be accompanied by a licensed resident hunter or a registered hunting guide

    Show the answer

They must be accompanied by a licensed resident hunter or a registered hunting guide

Company in the field. It's one sentence, placed right after the line saying all other hunters require a Non-resident Hunting Licence. The fee schedule prices that licence at $75, with a three-day version at $60, and lists resident and non-resident hunting guide licences separately again. So the accompaniment isn't an optional extra bolted on. It's part of the non-resident arrangement the Summary describes.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: Non-resident hunters must be accompanied by either a licensed resident hunter or a registered hunting guide while hunting in Prince Edward Island. Checked 2026-09-30.

  21. 21. Among the acts the Summary lists as unlawful is a shotgun capacity limit while hunting game. What is the number?

    1. More than three shells in the magazine and chamber combined
    2. More than two shells in the magazine
    3. More than five shells in the magazine and chamber combined
    4. No number is published for resident hunters

    Show the answer

More than three shells in the magazine and chamber combined

Three, counted across the magazine and chamber together, not the magazine on its own. That's the detail people get wrong. Two in the tube and one up the spout is the whole of it. The next item on the same list deals with carrying more than one shotgun, and frames it around every shotgun past the first being unloaded and disassembled, or unloaded and cased.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: use a shotgun that has a capacity of more than three shells in the magazine and chamber combined, while hunting game. Checked 2026-09-30.

  22. 22. The Summary sets two distances around buildings, people and livestock. What are they?

    1. 100 metres from a dwelling and 200 metres from a school
    2. 200 metres from a school, church, meeting place, occupied dwelling, farm building or livestock without the owner's permission, and 300 metres from a location where migratory birds are kept under permit
    3. 400 metres from any building on the Island
    4. 50 metres from a dwelling and 100 metres from livestock

    Show the answer

200 metres from a school, church, meeting place, occupied dwelling, farm building or livestock without the owner's permission, and 300 metres from a location where migratory birds are kept under permit

Two numbers with quite different things behind them. The 200-metre line runs around places where people and stock are, with the owner's permission written in as the exception. At 300 metres, it's about migratory birds kept under permit. Further down the same list, a separate item puts 400 metres between waterfowl hunting and any area baited with grain or other food.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: shoot at any game within 200 metres of any school, church, meeting place or any occupied dwelling, farm building, or livestock, without the owner’s permission; or shoot any game within 300 metres of a location where migratory birds are kept under permit. Checked 2026-09-30.

  23. 23. What does the Summary's list of unlawful acts say about a loaded firearm and a vehicle?

    1. It bites only while the vehicle is moving
    2. It bites only on vehicles inside a highway right-of-way
    3. Discharging, or having a loaded firearm in personal possession, while in or on any vehicle is listed as unlawful
    4. It covers ATVs and snowmobiles but not cars

    Show the answer

Discharging, or having a loaded firearm in personal possession, while in or on any vehicle is listed as unlawful

The wording is broad on purpose: in or on any vehicle, with personal possession counting every bit as much as discharging. Another page comes at vehicles from the other direction. It states that no person shall use any air, land or water vehicle to chase, pursue, worry, molest, take, hunt or kill any wildlife.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: while in or on any vehicle, discharge or have in personal possession a loaded firearm. Checked 2026-09-30.

  24. 24. Two of the Summary's time-of-day rules run on different clocks. How does it set them out?

    1. Both are drawn at one-half hour either side of sunset and sunrise
    2. Both are drawn at one hour either side
    3. The casing rule uses one-half hour and the discharge rule uses one hour
    4. Discharging where game is usually found is framed at one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise, while the firearm-casing item runs one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise

    Show the answer

Discharging where game is usually found is framed at one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise, while the firearm-casing item runs one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise

Half an hour for one, a full hour for the other. They sit seven items apart on the same list, which is exactly how people blur them together. The discharge item carves out a permit to hunt raccoons at night and the dispatching of a legally trapped furbearer, while the casing item ends with a permit exception of its own. Why does it matter? The Summary prints sunrise and sunset tables across a dozen pages, and once you're out there, those two clocks are what you're reading them for.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: possess a firearm that is not cased one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise unless authorized by a permit. Checked 2026-09-30.

  25. 25. The Summary names a calibre ceiling for red squirrel, snowshoe hare, raccoon, fox and coyote. What is it?

    1. No rifle larger than .22 calibre, and no shotgun loaded with a single bullet
    2. No rifle larger than .30 calibre
    3. Centrefire rifles only
    4. No ceiling is published for those species

    Show the answer

No rifle larger than .22 calibre, and no shotgun loaded with a single bullet

Nothing over .22 calibre in a rifle, and no shotgun slugs, across that whole list of species. Fox gets tightened a line later, where the Summary names cartridges larger than .22 rim fire or .17 centre fire. Over on the furbearer page, it adds that muzzle loading firearms are permitted for coyote hunting only.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: No person shall hunt red squirrel, snowshoe hare, raccoon, fox or coyote by use of a. a shotgun loaded with a single bullet; or, b. a rifle larger than .22 calibre. Checked 2026-09-30.

  26. 26. Non-toxic shot comes up twice in the Summary's list. Which groups does the first of those items name?

    1. Ruffed grouse, partridge, woodcock and snowshoe hare
    2. Ducks, geese, snipe and crows
    3. Coyote, fox, raccoon and red squirrel
    4. Every species on both schedules, without exception

    Show the answer

    Ducks, geese, snipe and crows

Ducks, geese and snipe, plus crow, all on the non-toxic side of the line. The companion item runs the other way and names the species lead shot isn't caught on: pheasant, ruffed grouse, Hungarian partridge, woodcock, snowshoe hare, raccoon, coyote, fox or squirrel. Why the fuss? The Summary's eagle pages explain it. Dead eagles recovered on the Island have tested positive for lead poisoning.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: possess or use shot other than non-toxic shot for hunting ducks, geese or snipe; and crows. Checked 2026-09-30.

  27. 27. Hare snares get a materials specification in the Summary. What does it come to?

    1. Braided steel cable of any gauge, fitted with a self-locking device
    2. Single strand brass wire, gauge unspecified, loop no larger than 15 cm
    3. Single strand brass wire of 20 to 24 gauge, with a loop no greater than 10 cm
    4. No specification is published for hare snares

    Show the answer

Single strand brass wire of 20 to 24 gauge, with a loop no greater than 10 cm

Single strand brass wire, 20 to 24 gauge, and a loop no bigger than 10 cm (the Summary gives it in inches too, at four). It sits in the same numbered list as the shot and calibre items, a decent reminder that Island snaring is written up as tightly as shooting is. Snaring hare carries its own licence in the fee schedule as well. The wire is only half of what there is to get right.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: set a snare for snowshoe hare made of materials other than single strand brass wire of 20 to 24 gauge, or set a snare for snowshoe hare with a wire loop greater than 10 cm. (4 inch). Checked 2026-09-30.

  28. 28. Every PEI hunting licence sits beside a Wildlife Conservation Fund fee. What does the Summary say that money does?

    1. It pays Conservation Officer salaries
    2. It covers the cost of the Hunter Safety Course
    3. It buys land for new Wildlife Management Areas
    4. It helps improve habitat for fish and many other species of Island wildlife

    Show the answer

It helps improve habitat for fish and many other species of Island wildlife

Habitat. The Summary even names who comes asking for the money each year: stream and river management groups. 4. The Summary does not publish a figure

    Show the answer

Roughly 45,000 hectares, classified as Natural Areas, Ponds and Wetlands, Provincial Forests, and Wildlife Management Areas

About 45,000 hectares across four classifications, each identified on the ground by one of four signs the Summary reproduces on the facing page. These are working forests, so harvest and management operations happen on them. Off-road vehicles are only permitted on certain properties. Open fires aren't permitted at all. Public Land Atlases are sold at the Forests, Fish and Wildlife office on Upton Road.

  30. 30. The Summary gives a page to bald eagles and lead. What figure does it publish on how little it takes?

    1. A single lead fragment of any size
    2. Two to three #6 pellets is enough to kill an eagle
    3. Around twenty pellets
    4. It lists symptoms but publishes no quantity

    Show the answer

Two to three #6 pellets is enough to kill an eagle

Two or three #6 pellets. The page explains the route in, too: eagles scavenge carcasses that may carry lead bullet fragments or pellets. Among the symptoms it lists are loss of balance, gasping, tremors and impaired flight. Acute poisoning plays out over hours to days, chronic over two to three weeks. The page's own suggestions are to recover shot game, or bury a carcass left in the field.

Source: Government of Prince Edward Island, 2026 Hunting Summary: Eagles are especially sensitive to lead poisoning; 2-3 #6 shot is enough to kill an eagle. Checked 2026-09-30.

  31. 31. The Summary's furbearer hunting page carries a one-line note about muzzle loaders. What does it say?

    1. Muzzle loaders are not named anywhere in the Summary
    2. Muzzle loaders are listed for fox and coyote together
    3. Muzzle loading firearms are permitted for coyote hunting only
    4. Muzzle loaders are treated the same as any other rifle

    Show the answer

Muzzle loading firearms are permitted for coyote hunting only

Coyote alone, out of the whole furbearer list. The page's second line is about shotguns, and it says the restriction on possessing more than one uncased shotgun while hunting game does not apply to rifles. Only two sentences. Tucked between the seasons table and the raccoon pages, they're easy to skip.

  32. 32. ATVs and hounds turn up together on a page of the Summary about coyotes. What does its Chasing Wildlife box state?

    1. Vehicles are restricted to public land during the coyote season
    2. Vehicles are exempted where the hunter holds a furbearer licence
    3. The rule covers land vehicles only
    4. No person shall use any air, land or water vehicle to chase, pursue, worry, molest, take, hunt or kill any wildlife or willfully destroy wildlife habitat

    Show the answer

No person shall use any air, land or water vehicle to chase, pursue, worry, molest, take, hunt or kill any wildlife or willfully destroy wildlife habitat

Air, land and water, all three, and wilful habitat destruction folded into the same sentence. The Summary's longer section accepts that ATVs and snowmobiles have a real use in locating and retrieving hunting dogs and reaching remote ground. That's precisely why it draws the line where it does. The practice it names is coyote hunting with hounds.

    3. The Migratory Birds Convention Act
    4. The Fisheries Act

    Show the answer

    The Migratory Birds Convention Act

The federal Migratory Birds Convention Act. It protects non-game migratory birds such as shorebirds, herons, grebes, songbirds and woodpeckers, and the Summary says it's illegal to shoot them. Most other birds are protected all year as well, eagles, hawks and owls included.

    3. A non-resident guide licence for night work
    4. A federal Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit

    Show the answer

A special permit from Fish and Wildlife, and they should let nearby residents know

Night raccoon hunting needs a special permit from Fish and Wildlife. Then there are the neighbours to think about. These are practice questions, not the official exam. We wrote them from the published course topics. We did not copy them from the Wildlife Conservation Act and its hunting and trapping regulations question bank. So a good score here means you are ready to book the real thing. It does not mean you are certified.

Questions about the PEI hunting regulations and species quiz

Is this the real Wildlife Conservation Act and its hunting and trapping regulations exam?

No. These are original practice questions written from published curriculum topics. They are not reproduced from the official question bank, and passing them does not certify you to hunt in Prince Edward Island.

What does the PEI hunting regulations and species quiz cover?

There are 5 topics here: species, seasons, safety, licensing, conservation. The official course covers the same ground in more depth.

Does a Prince Edward Island hunting licence work in other provinces?

No. Hunting licences are issued province by province, so a Prince Edward Island licence only covers Prince Edward Island. The hunter education credential is a separate question, and each province decides for itself which outside credentials it accepts. We set out what each one publishes in our guide to whether hunter education transfers between provinces.
